Octavin construit en 3 parties : le bocal rectiligne, amovible en palissandre ; le corps ovale à double perce parallèle en palissandre et le pavillon coudé amovible en maillechort situé près du bec.
L'instrument possède cinq trous de jeu, deux anneaux et quatorze clés en maillechort comportant des plaques rondes légèrement coniques. Toutes les clés sont à manchon ou à tringle. Le doigté est proche de celui du saxophone, avec une seule clé d'octave et extension au Sol grave à l'aide de trois clés commandées par le pouce gauche, comme sur le basson. Un anneau latéral peut être utilisé comme support par le pouce droit ; un autre à l'extrémité de la culasse n'a pas de fonction évidente sinon de retirer la plaque de la culasse.
La note la plus grave est Sol, effet réel Fa3.

Octavin built in 3 parts : the straight bocal, removable in rosewood ; the oval body with double parallel opening in rosewood ; the removable bent bell in maillechort located close to the mouthpiece.
Gets 5 holes, 2 rings and 14 maillechort keys. The fingering is close to the saxophone one, with one octave key and extention to the low G by means of 3 keys commanded by the left thumb, as on the bassoon. A lateral ring can be used as support by the right thumb ; the other one, on the head plate, gets no evident functions but to keep it off probably.
The lower note is G, real effect F3.

L'octavin, breveté par Oscar ADLER en 1892, possède la forme d'un mini basson, mais son bec à anche simple et sa perce le rapproche acoustiquement du tarogato soprano. Le fait d'avoir le pavillon près du visage est toutefois inhabituel.
Son état exceptionel et de celui des autres et rares exemplaires survivants, résulte du fait que l'octavin n'ait jamais trouvé son répertoire...donc quasi jamais quitté son étui ! ceci est une règle et l'exception à cette règle est cet instrument !

The patented octavin by Oscar ADLER in 1892, gets the small bassoon shape, but its mouthpiece with single reed and its opening comes closer it, Acoustically, to soprano tarogato.
The fact to get the bell close to the face Is however unusual.
Its exceptional condition and the one of the others and rares survivors examplaries, resulted of the fact that the octavin never found its repertory ! ...then never left its carrying case ! ... it is a rule and the exception of it is this instrument !
